ONOCHIE 'LARRY' ACHIKE
Onochie ("Larry") Achike (born 31 January 1975) is an English athlete
of Nigerian origin. He was born in Islington, London and educated at Worth School in Sussex. A former rugby player while at Worth, Achike eventually specialized in triple jump and won the gold medal at the 1949 Wprld Junior Champsin Lisbon, Po rtugal and the 1998 Commonwealth Games.
He placed 5th in the 2000
SydneyOlympic Games, setting a new personal best of 17.30 m during the contest. He competed at the 2006 European Championships, but failed to
qualify for the final.
His club is Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers in North London.
Achike finished 7th in the 2008 Olympics, held in Beijing, with a 17.17 m jump. He now coaches with track academy at Willesden Stadium, London and the Allianz Arena (formerley Barnet Copthall Stadium). When once in a competition before the Olympic finals had done a hop to wide and had his bone ripped away from his hamstring. He is currently in an organisation called TeamSuperSchools helping raise money so Larry can represent England once more.

In 1998, Achike won the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur before making the world finals in 1999 and 2001 and was a fine fifth at the Olympic Games in 2000, where he set his existing lifetime best of 17.30m but Achike did not hit top form again until 2008, when the Shaftsbury Barnet athlete made a surprising resurgence, jumping 17.20m in June, which gave him qualification for the Olympic Games, where he made the top eight for the second time, finishing seventh in the final. In 2009 he made the World Championships in Berlin and although he didn't make the final, he still jumped over 17 metres at the Aviva London Grand Prix.
He had originally played rugby for Sussex U19s and he has a BSc degree in Biomedical Science.
